Sanming Research Station of Forest Ecosystem and Global Change, Fujian, consists of a series of experiment sites stretching along the vast Wuyi Mountain, including theCastanopsis kawakamii Nature Reserve, Chenda Golden Silk Bay Forest Park, Wanmulin Nature Reserve, and Wuyishan Nature Reserve, and some other sites inNanping, Shunchang, Changting, and Ninghua.

Distribution of experimental sites of Sanming Research Station of Forest Ecosystem and Global Change, Fujian

Our stations locate between 25 ° 30 '~ 27 ° 54'N, and 116 ° 16 '~ 118 ° 09 'E. The region has a subtropical monsoonal climate, with the mean annual temperature of 12 ℃~20 ℃, annual sunshine hours of 1792~1871h, and the mean annual precipitation of 1500mm~2000mm or even above mainly occurringfrom March to September. Red soil is major soil type. Hilly and mountainous area occupies more than 90 percent of the region and has been known as a southeast mountain country with its highest elevation of 2158 m for Huanggang Mountain.

Field station is located in the mid-subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest area in the southeastern Eurasia near the Tropic of Cancer

Compared with other areas occupied by desert or steppe landscapes in the world with the same latitude, the region has a forest coverage up to 80% or more, belonging to the Subtropical Evergreen Broadleaved Sub-zone (IVA2b) in the Chinese Vegetation Regionalization Regime. In particular, best preserved and typical subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest ecosystems are distributed in the WuyiMountain, where biodiversity is abundant. The region was also a traditional production base of commercial forest in southern China. There are large areas of various plantations converted from natural evergreen broadleaved forests. However, due to high mountains and steep slopes, thin soil layers and frequent rainstorm, these mountain ecosystems have their potential vulnerability and often enhanced by human interference. The vulnerability and interference had caused the formation of so called Red Desert, as the name of various red soil eroded lands, and the occurrence of frequent floods. Moreover, being an interaction area of tropical marine air mass and polar continental air mass, this region is very sensitive to global climate change.

The station focuses on natural and secondary evergreen broadleaved forests, and main timber plantations, and tries to reveal these ecosystems’ structure, functions, ecological process and their responses to global changes.. Our objectives are as follows: (1) effects of global climate change on biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus and their feedbacks; (2) effects of climatic extreme events and human disturbances on forest water cycle; and (3) forest carbon management theory and technology. We hope to provide theoretical basis for subtropical forests’ adaption to climate change, eco-services improvement and forest carbon sequestration management, and to make contribution to national ecological conservation, climate change policy formulation and climate change related diplomatic negotiations.

Until now, platforms of global change experiments, forest hydrology, and forest carbon management have been established.

A series of projects have been undertaken, for instance, the State Key Development Program for Basic Research of China (973 plan), National Science and Technology Supported Program, and State Key Program, Science Foundation of Two Sides of Taiwan Strait, Excellent Youth Scholars, and other 50 projectssponsored by NFSC at our stations. More than 400 papers have been published and more than 10 provincial and ministerial level awards have been gained. There are over 50 graduate students having been cultivated. Also, home and abroad extensive cooperation has been established. The stations have 30 staffs, including 24 researchers and 6 technician.
